“The one who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd”
After spending 13 years in IT industry I got a chance to interact with young B.Tech and MCA freshers during campus drives at various colleges and Universities. There are few skills like C++,Java,Core Java,PHP which I could see in almost every candidate’s resume. When asked why they chose Java or PHP, only few students responded that they enjoy programming or web development/designing. Surprisingly most of them said that they chose these skills because their friends were going for it or JAVA/C++ and other programming skills are part of their curriculum. Most of the candidates admitted that they don’t like programming at all. In the end these students don’t get job in software development and Web Development as they have spent time on learning something that they don’t like. There is sheer lack of career counseling and guidance for students. I can personally relate with these students. I never liked programming languages during my B.Tech and studied it just to clear my exams. I have worked with major IT companies like HCL,Cognizant Asiapacific, Convergys India Services, ITBD but not as a software or web developer. I had an amazing career in Remote Infrastructure Management.
Now the big question is-
Are software development or Web development the only career options in IT? Its time to explore other career options which are at par with career in software development and Web Development. RIM (Remote Infrastructure Management) is one of them.
What is RIM?
Remote Infrastructure Management is one of the domains in IT. Remote infrastructure management consists of monitoring and managing the IT infrastructure components of a company from a remote location (outside the physical premises) and preventing and fixing problems across it. The infrastructure consists of Servers,Storage Devices, Data Centers, Private and Public cloud, Routers,Switches, Firewalls etc.
As per a Report by NASSCOM-McKinsey titled ‘Remote Infrastructure Management Services: Igniting India’s leadership globally, the RIM industry has created 325,000 to 375,000 jobs in India in year 2015.
The Report goes on to state that with global CIOs’ continued comfort with India as the “primary” offshore destination, the country will capture greater than 50 per cent of the world market i.e., USD 13 billion to USD 15 billion in revenue by the year 2020, hence creating a million job opportunities
